Salon Blush Business Card Design

My best friend opened up her own salon and asked me to do her business cards and referral cards for her. I am super proud of how they turned out. This was one of those projects that was fun from start to finish.

I love designing business cards and doing branding. It is so fun to come up with an identity for a company or person. I am super excited and also pretty nervous to come up with my own branding. I have a million ideas but only one can be used. I guess it is better to have more than less....ugh.

Quicken Loans' Offices Tour

My internship took my coworkers and myself on a tour of the Quicken Loans offices in downtown Detroit. I was inspired a lot by the trip and decided that I would be doing everything in my power to try and work for the company. I did not take photos of their office rooms out of respect for their workers, but I can tell you first hand that they are so fun. In one office, they had a football they could throw around and every time someone made a sale, they would ring a bell and the other workers would clap and cheer. The graphic designer space was my favorite by far and I know that I want to work somewhere like that when I graduate.

This is a found object installation in the graphic design work area. They have tables you can sit at and work that are out in the open away from the actual office spaces. The whole area gave off a super inspiring artsy vibe. Their work space is located in an old underground bank. So some of the meeting rooms and offices are in the vaults that used to hold lock boxes.

This photo was taken in an alley where there are murals on the walls and even a bar! This place is not your typical scary alley. There are string lights above you and it is super clean.

I am definitely going to be sending my portfolio (Once I have updated it!) and resume to everyone and anyone who can help me get into this company. It seems so amazing from the tour we took.

My First Tattoo Experience (Sailor Moon)

After saving for what felt like forever, I finally got my first tattoo back in October of last year. I was super nervous because I am a baby when it comes to needles or pain in general really. I thought it would be neat to share my experiences and maybe you could tell me yours. *Disclaimer: Not everyone's experiences are identical. It all depends on the situation, the artist, and the person. I can only speak from my own experiences.*

Deciding on a Design

I knew I wanted a Sailor Moon tattoo because I have been a moonie since I was 6 years old. I started by looking up Sailor Moon tattoos on Tumblr, but I was dissapointed because I did not find a whole lot with Luna in the design. I ended up finding this amazing tattoo and falling in love. I saved it as well as multiple other reference images to my Pinterest board.

Picking an Artist

I knew I wanted an artist who would be able to capture that bubbliness of anime style without elongating the characters and making them look stretched and skinny. I am not a huge fan of that style personally so I wanted to avoid it. I found Kadee by searching Disney tattoos in Michigan. She does some phenomal Disney inspired work. I knew if she could do Disney, she could do my Luna. If only I would have known she would do such a stellar job, I would not have been nearly as nervous!

How I Prepared

I brought a friend who was also getting tattooed by my artist and I am so glad I did. She really helped to ease the tension and I was less nervous having someone there who was getting a tattoo as well.

I researched a lot before I got my tattoo done. I read about different opinions for care, style, before-care, etc. One source I really valued (and still do!) is QCKND. I love her Youtube channel. She seems very knowledgeable when it comes to tattoos and what you should do beforehand as well as after.

I saved extra money than I thought my tattoo would cost. My tattoo artist quoted me an estimate, but you also have to factor in tip. I also wanted to have extra in case it did end up costing more than anticipated. You never know when you might want to add another little something to the design, or if you might want it bigger. It is always better safe than sorry, and if you do not need the money than treat yo self to some "congrats you were brave and got a tattoo" dinner.

How it Felt

I am not going to lie to you, it did not feel like happiness and sunshine. When asked to describe how the outline felt, I like to compare it to a steak knife being dragged across your skin. However, I will say that the shading and color did not hurt as bad as the outline for me. I think that was because my skin was so numb from the hour of outlining. The entire process was pretty uncomfortable, but that is reasonable because there are a bunch of needles going into your skin. During the whole tattooing process, I clenched my muscles in my arms and legs so I was extremely sore for a couple days after. The area where my tattoo is was very sore for about a week afterwards.

Overall Experience

I had a wonderful first experience. I read so many horror stories online before I went, and I was relieved after I went in for my consultation. My tattoo artist, Kadee Spangler, was super sweet and awesome. We watched Studio Ghibli movies while she worked on my friend and I and she made us feel more at home and relaxed.

Chroma Tattoo was a very clean and nice tattoo shop. The other artists who were working were very friendly and joked around with one another. They bought my friend and I Middle Eastern food for lunch, and declined our offers to pay for ourselves. I thought that was super sweet, plus I was starving because we got there at 10am and did not get done until about 5pm.

What I Would Do Differently

I would definitely wear extra comfy clothes. I think I wore leggings and a tank top, but I would bring fuzzy socks and the comfiest pants I can find next time. Honestly, next time I will probably go out and buy special comfy clothes just for the occasion. I was comfortable, but I definitely will need to do something so that I am not so tense. I also think it may have helped if I brought juice. I read online that some people always bring candy and juice to raise their sugar levels and to help distract them from the pain.

I kept my tattoo wrapped in cling-wrap for about 2 weeks. That was such a bad idea because it needed air and I ended up breaking out in a gross rash. I think I also may have been allergic to the Aquaphor I used. Next time I am going to watch it very closely and only wrap it when I am going to sleep.

I'd love to see some of your tattoos! If you can, link me to some photos. Also, please share your experiences with me, good or bad. I am always looking to learn more about tattoos!

OOTD: Bicycles and Dogs

I freaking love this shirt! I found it at a thrift store for $4 the other day. It is so comfy and it is one of those materials that would be see-through, except it has a built in undershirt. I'm not talking about the kind that get all wonky when you try to put them on. It is like, sewn in place. Also, it has bicycles all over it, I just love it.

This outfit post would not be complete without some goofy facial expressions from yours truly. This is how I act natural. I know it does not look like there are people around in the photos but we were right next to/below a road. There were people walking their dogs, riding bikes, etc. Oh! We also saw a beaver! I have never seen a beaver in person before. He waddled away so fast, it was the cutest thing ever!

That rock right there is the one I scraped my leg on. It was bleeding and everything. I am such a clutz. I am constantly bumping into things, knocking them over, or hurting myself somehow. Alright, I guess I will show you the photo of my leg getting assaulted by the rock...

Free Sailor Moon Poster Printable

Hello Moonies! I love making posters and Sailor Moon inspired stuff so I figured I would make a cute poster freebie for you guys! It is 18x24in, so unless you have a poster printer, you will have to go get it printed. You can go to a local printer, or even your nearest Office Max. You can even ask them to print it on the cheapest paper, and then frame it. It will be flimsy but the frame should protect it.

Ways to Deal With Negativety + Stress

Surround Yourself With Positivity

When you fill your surroundings with more positive things and people, you will in turn be a more positive person. Try reading inspirational quotes, looking at fun projects on Pinterest, or watching cute animal videos (I will take any excuse to watch cute animal vids!).

Go Out and Do Something!

Sometimes it is good to take a break and stay indoors, but it is not good if you find yourself doing that more often than not. Boost your positivity by going for a walk through a park or beach, walking through a new-to-you city, or go on a coffee (or tea!) date with a friend.

Delete the Facebook App From Your Phone

Deleting my Facebook app helped me to be so much more positive. I found that everyone I knew was posting evil hateful things or arguing about politics, I could not take it anymore. In place of your Facebook app, you can download an app for organization or a cute game (my personal fav is Neko Atsume). If I do get Facebook again, I am going to sort through and hide people from my timeline.

Write Yourself Notes

Sometimes when I am feeling super stressed I write myself little motivational notes to keep me going and in a good mood. I feel like I get so much more accomplished when I am in a decent mood. I also find it super helpful to write myself reminders and to do lists. If you feel organized, you will be less stressed. Besides, who does not love checking off a task?

Treat Yo Self

My favorite of the list. It is great to work hard and accomplish things, but sometimes you need a break. Treat yourself to some sushi, that awesome Funko Pop figurine you have been eyeing (Sailor Moon ones are out now!), or a fresh new hair cut. You deserve it!

What helps you deal with negativity and stress?
